Boys basketball
The San Lorenzo Valley High Cougars fielded an athletic team this season but will finish the season in fifth place in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League. Shooting guard Blake Bechtle led the scoring for the Cougars at 16.2 points per game. Forward Luke Roberts added nine points per game, and Jared Johnson averaged 8.5.
The Cougars are 8-15 overall and 3-8 in a powerful league dominated by Aptos and Santa Cruz with one regular-season game left before the league tournament. They will host St. Francis of Watsonville at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11.
Girls basketball
The Cougars are in last place in the SCCAL with a record of 1-8 going into their final game against St. Francis at home at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Shannon Belardi leads the scoring for San Lorenzo Valley with 7.5 points per game, and senior Savanna Prather averages 5.5 rebounds per game.
Boys soccer
The Cougar boys are 4-9-2 overall and 3-5 in SCCAL play as the season winds to a close. Micah Chase has an impressive 24 saves at goalie, a position to which he switched mid-season, and junior Nick Calabray leads the Cougars with four goals.
The Cougars will host Santa Cruz at home at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Girls soccer
SLV is in sixth place with a record of 4-9-1 overall and 1-8 in league play. The team’s only SCCAL win thus far was a 3-0 shutout of St. Francis of Watsonville. Lacey Monack is the leading scorer for the Cougars with four goals, Chere Garcia has recorded two assists and Patricia Hulter has made 11 saves at goalie.
Wrestling
Senior Logan Kellogg is 23-4 in the 189-pound weight class and is one of the brightest spots in the SCCAL wrestling picture. Kellogg has been ranked as high as fifth in the state and is first in both the SCCAL and Central Coast Section rankings. Sophomore Michael Kraft won the first tournament of his young career at the Apple Cider Classic and is ranked seventh in the section and first in the SCCAL in the 112-pound weight class. Senior heavyweight Ben Landouer is ranked fifth in the CCS and is the highest-ranked wrestler in the SCCAL.
