A foot chase between two local deputies and 20-year-old Marcus McComas ended with an injured deputy and McComas’ arrest near the corner of Highway 9 and Holiday Lane in Ben Lomond.
McComas, a Ben Lomond resident, was stopped for a vehicle code violation at 1:53 a.m. Sept. 13 and appeared intoxicated, according to Santa Cruz County deputies on the scene.
“The deputies and McComas chatted for a bit, and it was discovered that McComas was on active probation out of San Benito County,” sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Lansdowne said.
McComas then darted off, running toward Highlands Park, and both deputies rushed after him.
During the pursuit, one of the deputies caught up to McComas and they tumbled to the ground, Lansdowne said. The deputy was knocked unconscious with a concussion and sustained a broken collarbone as a result of the fall.
McComas sprang up and continued to flee until the second deputy caught up with him at the park.
“They got into a wrestling match of sorts,” Lansdowne said.
The deputy struck McComas several times with a baton. Lansdowne said he did not know exactly how many times McComas was hit.
Both McComas and the injured deputy were taken to Dominican Hospital, where they were treated and released.
McComas was arrested and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence and obstructing, resisting or delaying an officer through injury.
