San Lorenzo Valley Athletic Boosters is a group of dedicated enthusiasts of SLVHigh School sports that donates time and resources to help guide the financial subsidizing of sports programs at San LorenzoValleyHigh School.
For over 35 years, this group of concerned parents, community members, coaches and teachers has volunteered to financially support SLVHS athletic programs. Over these years, budget cuts have caused many programs like art, music and sports to face shortfalls in their operating revenues. SLVAB has hosted a variety of events to keep funding sports programs and allowing high school athletes to continue playing their sports, applying for college athletic scholarships and maintaining the high spirit of SLV sports in the community.
In 1993 when SLVAB secured the opportunity to host Monday night bingo games at the Portuguese Hall in Santa Cruz, the program’s financial picture changed dramatically. This ongoing fundraiser has generated over $80,000 per year to support our athletic programs and facilities. At the heart of this important event is a solid group of volunteers. They show up every Monday night to support their athletes. As a result, SLVHS is the only high school in Santa CruzCounty that does not use a ‘pay to play’ system to fund sports.
SLVAB’s board of directors guides the funding of San LorenzoValleyHigh School sports programs through careful planning, sharp financial management, and dedication. One of their proud achievements is the “Dollars for Scholars” program that awards $500.00 scholarships to graduating senior athletes every year. Since 2002, SLVAB has given out over $40,000 in awards to graduating athletes.
Each February SLVAB hosts a dinner to raise money for this program. This year it will be a catered event with live music, a silent auction, and lots of fun. We hope the community will once again show its support of athletics and come out to dinner on Saturday, February 13th, at the Zayante Fire House.
