On Friday the Falcons and Cougars squared off in their annual Dual in the Pool. Both teams train at the SLVHS facility and know it very well — which usually gives rise to some fast swims and a fun, competitive meet. This year did not disappoint.
The Lady Falcons varsity team entered with a record of 1-1 and the Lady Cougars at 0-2. The Falcons earned a hard-fought 98-60 win to move to 2-1.
The Lady Falcons swept the relay events. Madelyn Saranto, Bailey Lemmon and Linnea Bird were all double-winners for the Falcons — with Lemmon just over the CCS qualifying times in both 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. The closest race of the meet was the 50 freestyle sprint, where Falcon’s swimmer Victoria Gouw, just out-touched SLV’s Sarah Schoepp in a difference of 2/10ths of a second. Carley Zilge won the 500 freestyle for the Cougars in a 6:33.22.
Alexandra Ayers, SVHS JV Coach was impressed with the Falcon performance.
“The girls swam very well from both schools; we had some better finishes today. Our 400 Free Relay team broke the school record on their way to a win and Bailey broke the 100 Freestyle record, just missing her CCS cut with a 56.45,” Ayers said after the meet.
The Junior Varsity Girls from Scotts Valley notched up another win to move to 2-1 for the season with a 98-71 win over the JV Cougars. The JV Falcons won 8 of 11 events, with Kayla Rimac a double-winner in the 100 IM and 100 breaststroke, setting a new SVHS JV record in that event with a 1:18.52.
On the varsity boys’ side it was a Cougar landslide, beating Scotts Valley 117-46. The Cougars swept the relay events. Connor Lemmon was the sole Falcon swimmer to score wins, a double-winner taking the 100 fly in a new SVHS record of 1:01.01 and the 500 freestyle in 5:10.48. Colin Elmer from Scotts Valley was the 1 meter springboard winner.
The Cougars climb to 1-2; while the Falcons fall to 1-2 for the season. The Cougars next swim at Harbor March 25th, while the Falcons are idle until April 15, when they swim a double-dual meet with Soquel and Santa Cruz.
