Around 4:45am Wednesday, firefighters learned of a fire at the McDermott Fire Station in Bonny Doon, at the intersection of Empire Grade, Ice Cream Grade and Felton-Empire Road.

The response to 7276 Empire Grade included crews from Cal Fire, the Santa Cruz County Fire Department and the Felton Fire Protection District.

“First arriving resources found active fire and the water tender involved,” a Cal Fire CZU spokesperson said on Twitter. “Crews set priorities and conducted primary search of both stories and simultaneously conducted fire attack.”

The firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading beyond the water tender.

“The station received smoke and water damage,” the spokesperson added. “The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and is being investigated.”
