Accident involving teen a true tragedy
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Kirsten Wetterhorn, who was tragically killed in a car accident on Highway 236 this month.
Students at San Lorenzo Valley High School have done an honorable job mourning a classmate. It cumulated in a candlelight vigil Wednesday night on the high school football field.
We hope that this tragedy will result in some form of good — that students and adults take heed on the roadways, each and every time they are behind the wheel.
Scotts Valley library on the way
Kudos to Scotts Valley leaders, who kept pushing to build a new Scotts Valley branch despite the funding issues the Santa Cruz County Library System faces.
The library grand opening is set for June 18, and it serves notice that things can still get done to benefit the populace, even in harsh economic times.
Some may disagree with buying the building, but we applaud city leaders for realizing the first physically recognizable step in the Town Center project — a branch library the city can take pride in. We also applaud the Friends of the Library for continued fundraising efforts to furnish the refurbished structure.
Teens aren’t so badly off
A two-week examination of what activities teens can take part in the San Lorenzo Valley resulted in an interesting conclusion.
Outside of the obvious transportation problems that teens face if they don’t have a driver’s license or a car in the valley, there appear to be plenty of organized activities for teens — if they wish to seek them out.
In the two-part story, we described the rise and fall of teen centers in the valley. Teens are not better off without a teen center, but we applaud the schools for offering so many clubs, groups and sports that cost youngsters almost nothing. Bingo nights and a host of other fundraisers by parents and booster clubs make it so that every student has the opportunity to participate in sports without forking over a check at the start of the season.
San Lorenzo Valley parents and businesses should be doubly applauded, because their school district is the only one in the county to offer this to their high school students. We hope such gracious support continues indefinitely.
