Joe Shreve

It’s been a year to the day since I was handed the editorial reins to the newspaper which I’d grown up reading. It was meant to be a temporary arrangement, but as it happened, I never gave them back.
Until now.
Yes, this issue marks my final round as editor of the Press-Banner. More than that, however, it also will mark the last days of my 11 years as a professional journalist. I will be returning to school to pursue a career in education.
Normally, I find these swan song columns to be self-serving and bordering on egocentric, but I’m going to go for it anyway.
This past year as editor was challenging to put it very mildly and I take great pride in saying that I rose to the occasion. I adapted as a journalist, I grew as a person, I learned to prioritize, and I came to the conclusion that it was time for the next chapter of my life to begin.
With that being said, I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to recognize my family for their unwavering love and support.
Whether it was simply letting me vent, spiriting me away from the office when it was clear I needed to see the sunlight, or a million other things, I could not have done this without them.
And, to my Press-Banner family — everything I said back in the holiday section is as true now as it was then. Thank you all truly for everything.
I have no regrets of my year as editor, nor the nearly five years spent covering the news of the Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley communities. It’s been a true honor to bring the news to you each week.
Sure, there were stories I would have liked to tell but couldn’t, but the ones that I could, I gave them everything I had. And I stand by that.
