A 90-year-old man and his 88-year-old wife died of injuries from gunshot wounds in what Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office investigators are calling a murder-suicide.
When deputies arrived on the 100 block of Sims Road at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, Ray Wiens was pronounced dead from a gunshot to the head.
His wife, Kathryn Wiens, was unconscious and was airlifted to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in grave condition. She died three days later of bullet wounds to the head.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Carney said that the investigation has determined that Ray Wiens most likely shot his wife before turning the firearm on himself.
Investigators say the couple’s deteriorating health was the primary factor in the incident.
