Scotts Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees President Michael Shulman was re-elected to a third four-year term, leading all candidates. He will be joined by three new trustees on the five-member board.
Incumbent Kim Shultz, an engineer, also was elected to his first four-year term after his appointment to a vacant seat in 2013. But 12-year incumbent Sue Roth was upset in Tuesday’s voting, losing her four-year seat to newcomer Sue Rains, an accountant.
Newcomer Roger Snyder, a project manager, easily won election to one of the two open two-year seats.
The second two-year seat is neck-and-neck, with just 26 votes separating Corey Warner and Stephanie Espinola, with an undetermined number of mailed ballots still uncounted. Espinola is a school employee and would have to resign her seat before taking office.
In other contested local races, Daron Pisciotta, Russ Patterson and Alan Smith were elected to the Scotts Valley Fire District, and Bill Smallman and Margaret Bruce were elected to the San Lorenzo Valley Water District board.
