2013 marks the 40thyear in business of Erik’s DeliCafe, a chain of Bay Area soup, salad, and sandwich shops that got its start in Scotts Valley in 1973.
In celebration of that anniversary, a celebration is scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 17 at the original Erik’s at 222 Mount Hermon Road in the Kings Village Shopping Center.
Beginning at 11 a.m., the event will feature birthday cake, memorabilia, and a Sandwiches With Character eating contest between bikers and surfers. Erik and Judy Johnson, the founders of Erik’s DeliCafe will be on hand at about noon.
Part of a three-day, three-location tour, 50 percent of the day’s net profits will be contributed to benefit the Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks.
On Monday, Sept. 16, the Capitola Erik’s DeliCafe location will host an adoption event for the Santa Cruz SPCA between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. outside the restaurant. Fifty percent of the day’s net profits will benefit the SPCA.
On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Erik’s DeliCafe location on Walnut Street in Santa Cruz will be host to a flash mob by the Boys and Girls Club, following a commemoration at City Hall by Vice Mayor Lynn Robinson. Fifty percent of the day’s net profits will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Cruz.
