In what shaped up to be one of the biggest game of the regular season, the Scotts Valley High School Falcons (7-2 overall 4-1 in league) crushed Santa Cruz High School’s highly touted football team in a 49-29 offensive onslaught last weekend.
Five Falcons spearheaded the offensive explosion. Colin Corbella, Victor Passanisi, Jack Pasquini, Joe Gillette and Andrew Stumbo combined for 495 yards and seven touchdowns against a Santa Cruz defense that had only allowed 80 points all season.
Corbella, who last week broke the Scotts Valley all-time rushing record, added another 273 rushing yards on 27 carries with three touchdowns bringing his season total to 1,526 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He currently sits in fifth place all-time in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League rushing record books with one game remaining in the regular season. The Falcons will host Saint Francis Saturday.
Santa Cruz dropped to 3-1 and 6-2 overall with two games remaining. The Cardinals still must face league-leading and undefeated Aptos High on Nov. 11.
Pasquini, the Falcons senior quarterback, eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark passing by going 4-for-8 for 58 yards and two touchdowns. For the season he’s thrown for 1,048 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Passanisi added 155 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns, but it is the Falcon offensive line has been the unsung heroes as they have allowed Corbella and Passanisi to average well over 7 yards per carry this season.
“Those guys deserve all the credit in the world,” said Falcons Head Coach Louie Walters. “They have been opening huge holes all season and are really the foundation for any success we have found.”
The Falcon offensive line consists of Joel Claassen, Patrick Flebbe, Tyler Marshall, Patrick Marigonda and Carson Shoemate.
With the win Scotts Valley is in position for a Central Coast Section playoff berth providing they beat St. Francis (2-6, 0-4 SCCAL) at 2 p.m. Saturday Nov. 5 in what will be the Falcon’s final home game before the playoffs.
