Scotts Valley senior Sofia Niklaus had a game-best 10 goals in the Falcons’ 17-6 win over Monte Vista Christian in Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division action April 25.

With the win, the Falcons improved to 6-2 in league play with three games remaining in the regular season. Senior Dillon Fiorita added three goals and one assist, while junior Lola Ritsema contributed a pair of goals and one assist.

Senior Skylar Dufour had one and two assists for Scotts Valley (6-2), which plays at Carmel (4-3) in PCAL Gabilan Division action on Tuesday at 3:30pm.

Boys’ tennis

Scotts Valley 4, at San Lorenzo Valley 2: The Falcons closed out the regular season with a hard fought victory over San Lorenzo Valley in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League action April 24.

In the first of two thrilling third set tiebreaker matches, Scotts Valley junior Lincoln Verinsky and freshman Freddy Padilla defeated Everett Calender and James Collins 6-7, 6-1 (8) at No. 2 doubles. 

Falcons’ junior duo of Steve Saji and Jason Krok won their No. 3 match in a three set tiebreaker 1-6, 6-3, (6).   

In singles action, Scotts Valley senior Eli Diamond defeated Sawyer Amos in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, while Falcons’ junior Aditya Hannon beat SLV’s Oscar Schipper 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. SLV won by default at No. 3 singles, and both teams defaulted at No. 4.

SLV’s senior tandem of August Hughes and Asher Hughes defeated Scotts Valley juniors Jacob Bodeman and Garvasis Kuriakose in straight sets 6-1,6-0 at No. 1 doubles. 

Scotts Valley finished with a 4-6 record in league play, and currently own a 4-8 overall record. 

“Considering our small roster this year, I was very pleased with how we competed,” Scotts Valley head coach Scott Goodrich said in an email. “The effort was always there and everyone improved over the season.”

Next up, the SCCAL Boys Tennis Tournament at Imperial Courts in Aptos, which started Tuesday. The singles and doubles championship matches are Wednesday at 3pm, with the winners advancing to the Central Coast Section playoffs.

High school softball

At San Lorenzo Valley 17, Santa Cruz 5 (5 innings): Senior Abigale Krepelka had three hits, including a pair of doubles, three RBIs and scored three runs in the Cougars’ win against the Cardinals in SCCAL play April 24.

Teammate junior Sophia Sarmiento had one double, one triple, four RBIs and scored a pair of runs, while senior Angie Fulkerson had one home run and four RBIs. Grace Purtscher had two hits and a pair of RBIs.

Purtscher also recorded the win in the circle, allowing five runs on five hits while tallying six strikeouts in five innings pitched for SLV (8-6, 6-2), which will host Scotts Valley (12-5, 5-1) on Tuesday at 4:30pm.

Scotts Valley 10, Soquel 2: Senior pitcher Sofie Seese allowed two runs on four hits while racking up 11 strikeouts in the Falcons’ victory against the Knights in SCCAL play April 24. Teammate senior Taylor Wilson had three hits, including one home run and five RBIs, while senior Gracie Delgado had one double and scored a pair of runs. 

Sophomore Lorelie had two hits and scored one run, while Jillian Ong had a pair of RBIs for Scotts Valley (12-5, 5-1), which plays at San Lorenzo Valley (8-6, 6-2) on Tuesday at 4:30pm.  

Boys’ volleyball

At San Lorenzo Valley 3, Aptos 0: Outside hitter Curtis Hurtado had eight kills and three aces to help lift the Cougars past the Mariners in three sets 25-20, 25-14, 25-15 in SCCAL play April 24. With the win, SLV (5-4) improved to 4-4 in league play.

College baseball

Cabrillo earns postseason berth: The Seahawks extended the 2025 season by earning the No. 21 seed in the California Community College Athletic Association Baseball NorCal Regional playoffs. 

Cabrillo will play at No. 4 Feather River (31-9)—champion of the Golden Valley Conference—in a three-game series starting with Game 1 on Thursday at 2pm. On Friday, Game 2 is scheduled at 11am, and Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled shortly afterward at 2pm.  

The Seahawks placed third in the Coast Conference South Division with an 11-9 record in conference play, and finished with an 18-21 overall record. They capped off the regular season on a five game win streak, including a 5-4 victory against South Division champion West Valley on April 22.
