The Scotts Valley Falcon Police Athletic League Midget team wrapped up the regular season with an 8-0 record.
During their stellar regular season, the team ended three other teams undefeated streaks with a strong running attack and a stingy defense.
The team averaged over 32 points a game featuring power running by D’Shawn Hopkins, Kurt Lambaren and Trevor Alvarez. Daniel Garcia kicked extra points and Nick Reyes directing the attack at quarterback.
“The offensive line is what makes all of this possible,” said Head Coach Jim Danels. “Our line has been dominant all season long with a depth usually not found in youth football.”
Danels said the team lost three players to season-ending injuries early in the season, but was able to hold every team it played less than 10 points a game.
The team consistently shut down teams that had up to 10 high school freshman while themselves consisting of mostly 8th grade players and a few 7th graders.
Danels said the coaches all agreed that the dedication, intelligence and work ethic of this group makes them a special. Injured players Dalton Locke, Mikey Bradley and Ryan Myers embody the dedication this team by still showing up to practice and games to support their teammates despite not being able to play, Danels said.
The majority of the team has been together for three years and during that time has a 26-3 record. They won the 2009 PeeWee Championship and made it to the semifinals last year as Junior Midgets.
The team starts the playoffs Saturday, Nov. 5 in their bid for another PAL Championship.
