On Friday night under the lights, a fired up Falcons varsity football team concluded Scotts Valley High’s festive homecoming week with a 60-28 win over visiting Harbor High on Friday, Nov. 8.
Scotts Valley appeared ready to play at the opening whistle and scored within the first 19 seconds of the game on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Jake Lobo to senior captain Willie Johnston.
The Falcons shut down the Pirates and scored five more touchdowns in the first half before the Pirates got on the scoreboard.
Senior captain Jake Rehnberg scored next with a 14-yard run, followed by a 35-yard pass from Lobo to Alec Turowski.
Rehnberg scored again with a six-yard run, which Lobo added to with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Locke. Johnston finished the Falcons first-half scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run with 3:53 remaining.
Pablo Correa had an 8-yard touchdown run for the Pirates just before the half and Scotts Valley went into the break up 32-6.
The Pirates tried to come back in the second half with quarterback Milo Small and Correa working in tandem to complete three touchdowns.
However Harbor could not counter the Falcons aggressive play that included an interception by each Turowski and Johnston, and 10-yard and 44-yard touchdown runs by Rehnberg, and a 25-yard touchdown run by Tyler Bisel.
“It was a great team effort,” said Head Coach Louie Walters. “It’s always nice to win homecoming and everyone contributed.”
A record was set during the game.
Johnston set a new school record for the Falcons with 114 points scored in one season, overriding the previously set record of 112 points set by standout running back Kyle Hardwick in 2008.
“We made the best of it tonight,” said Johnston. “It was a team game, nothing was individual.”
Rehnberg led the team with 287 yards rushing on 22 carries, to go along with his four touchdowns.
After a homecoming rally on Friday that filled the gym with maroon and gold, the students voted for homecoming king and queen.
Seniors Nico Ponza and Nicole LaPorte were crowned king and queen at halftime.
Other court members were Hannah Freeman, Alex Foy, Samantha Braverman, Darby McFall, Simon Harris, Jace Hardwick, Tim Potts, and Brett Turner.
Scotts Valley is now 3-1 in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League and plays Santa Cruz High away on Nov. 15.
