Scotts Valley High School capitalized on the narrow margin allotted them by the San Lorenzo Valley Wrestling team and topped the Cougars 42-33 in a heated Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League showdown.
The Falcons kept their unbeaten streak alive through league play as they approach another faceoff against the unbeaten Aptos Mariners.
The Cougars earned three wins by forfeit in the heavyweight divisions and the Falcons took home four forfeits in the lighter weights.
At 108 pounds Kevin Eddington pinned his opponent in the first round as did teammate Jake Revino. The next three weights were forfeited to the Falcons before the Cougars got on the board with an 12-8 decision that went to Eli Doran.
Michael Kraft kept the ball rolling for the Cougars with a first round pin over Scotts Valleys Doug Peyser. Scotts Valley’s Scott Boynton bested SLV’s Patrick Brooks by a 9-6 decision and Scotts Valleys Baldan Daishev topped the Cougars 172 pound wrestler Elijah Schoepp in a 6-1 decision.
Karl Johnson won the final match of the night for the Cougars with a first round pin over Falcon 184-pounder Daniel Garcia.
The Cougars then earned the three final forfeits in the 192, 222, and 297 weight classes.
“We really got a good opportunity to showcase our resiliency,” said Falcon Head Coach Jared Norman. “It is always a great match-up when we wrestle SLV but I am proud of how our team did.”
The Falcons will wrestle next at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31 against the undefeated Aptos Mariners in a battle for the top spot in league.
The Cougars next wrestle in the Overfelt Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 28 before their next league showdown at 6 p.m. Jan. 31 at home against Harbor High.
Both teams are preparing for the SCCAL League finals which will take place Feb. 17.
