For Louis Kruse, a San Lorenzo Valley High School senior who is headed to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York for college, SLV’s winter musical presents a new kind of challenge.
“I’m playing a romantic role,” Kruse said. “I have never had to do that. It’s one of the most intimidating experiences of my life.”
Kruse takes on the role of Nick Piazza in “Fame,” SLV’s winter production, and must learn to relate with shy aspiring actress Serena Katz in the musical.
The cast is made up of 43 students, all of whom sing, dance and deliver lines during the family-friendly story that highlights decisions and relationships that high school students often experience.
One example is John Wasielewski, a senior who plays Joe Vegas in the show.
“I love that I can be a regular high school boy and just slob over girls,” Wasielewski said. “My last two roles have been serious roles.”
For Jack Olson, who plays Schlomo Metzenbaum, the jump into the spotlight is a new and exciting turn. He’s previously worked as a stage manager or technician.
“I’m enjoying being on stage,” he said. “It’s a completely different perspective.”
Along with the actors and actresses, 20 students will be behind the scenes managing the lights, sets and countless other details.
Director Kathie Kratochvil, one of the founders of Mountain Community Theater and a teacher at San Jose State University, is in her third year with the school.
“I love working with the SLV students,” she said. “I love coming here, because the students are so into theater and want to learn, and they’re so easy to teach.”
Kratochvil is joined by musical director Arinda Krishna Das and choreographer Shannon Marie Kerr, an equity actor and SLV alumna.
Kratochvil is proud of the recent success of the theater program that now has seniors teaching the intricacies of theater to freshmen. There will even be student directors for the spring performance.
“It’s really grown into a pretty big program,” she said. “There is only one drama class, but a huge number of kids come after school.”
Drama teacher Carly Wiencek echoed Kratochvil’s opinion.
“We have a very talented cast. They’re great kids here. I’m impressed with their dedication, talent and kindness.”
