A 60-year-old Moss Landing man was killed in a crash on southbound State Route 17, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officers responded at about 3:35pm on Jan. 26 to a report of a crash on southbound Highway 17 south of Vine Hill Road. Investigators determined the man was driving a red 1990 Mazda Miata southbound at an undetermined speed when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway, traveled down an embankment and struck a tree west of the highway.

The driver suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP.

Authorities later confirmed the man—whose name was not released—had been reported missing Jan. 22. Investigators believe the crash occurred sometime between Jan. 21 and Jan. 26, though the exact time remains under investigation.

It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to contact CHP dispatch at 831-796-2160.
