Lovers of watercolors in the San Lorenzo Valley have a new place to shop for fine art as local painter Nancy Riedell recently opened her home studio to the public last week.
Riedell converted the 300-square-foot basement of her house — located at 6385 Highway 9 in Felton — into a combination art studio and display gallery earlier in the year when she participated in the Santa Cruz County Open Studios Art Tour for the first time.
“Since I live on Highway 9, I thought it’d be fun to have an open gallery,” Riedell said.
The walls of the gallery are festooned with examples of Riedell’s art, watercolors depicting scenes from nature such as seasons, landscapes, and plant life.
“All the artwork I’ve done in the last two years is here,” she said. “I paint in collections of five.”
Riedell said that the idea behind her gallery was to bring the public to see her works that are for sale in time for the holiday season. Most recently, her artwork was part of a display at the Chaminade resort in Santa Cruz.
Her artwork is available for sale at the gallery in full-sized and half-sized paintings, as well as smaller sizes and greeting cards. She also has mugs for sale and, for additional cost, can frame pieces.
She said that her hours will likely vary somewhat, but her studio will typically be open daily between Wednesdays and Sundays in the late morning and early afternoon hours.
Riedell said that she would be posting “open” signs outside the studio that will be visible to motorists on Highway 9 during the hours her studio will be open.
