The Felton Farmers’ Market is set to host its annual Apple-A-Day Festival on Tuesday, Sept. 10, celebrating one of Santa Cruz County’s most cherished crops: the apple.

The event, held during regular market hours from 1:30-5:30pm, will feature a variety of activities for both children and adults, all in honor of the apple.

“Apples have been one of the most important and long-grown crops in Santa Cruz County. They are healthy, delicious, hardy and loved for endless reasons,” said Nicole Zahm, Education and Events Coordinator for Santa Cruz Community Farmers’ Markets. “This event has become a beloved tradition over the past decade, and we’re so happy to be rolling it out again this summer.”

The festival will include apple pressing and cider tasting with Santa Cruz Cider, where attendees can learn “how many apples it takes to fill a jar with their liquid gold.” In addition, Chef Jessica Yarr, owner of Grove Restaurant, will offer a free vegetable butchery class from 3-4pm, teaching participants how to use seasonal produce in creative ways.

For children, the Santa Cruz Public Libraries’ bicycle-powered bookmobile, KERMIT, will host an apple scavenger hunt, offering a chance to “learn foodie facts, talk to farmers and win a basket of strawberries.” The event will also feature live music, face painting and organic apples for sale, along with all the usual offerings of the Felton Farmers’ Market.

“With over 30 years under its belt, the Felton Farmers’ Market is a celebrated staple of the San Lorenzo Valley,” said Zahm. “As we get deeper into the season and the variety of fruits and vegetables expand with long days and warm weather, remember that the Market connects residents with regional growers from the mountain towns.”
