Felton Fire Protection District (FFPD) Board of Directors has scheduled a special meeting on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. to discuss a proposed parcel tax and related election plans.
FFPD is considering calling a special election this December on a $700 flat parcel tax. If approved by at least two-thirds of voters, the measure could raise about $1.25 million each year over five years to support fire district operations. The election is expected to cost around $40,000.
At a meeting on Sept. 6, district officials discussed the draft resolution for the parcel tax. Concerns were raised about the process used to create the proposal, which some believe was drafted with the help of artificial intelligence. Some community members also questioned how the funds might be spent, noting that a large portion could go toward making the interim fire chief, Isaac Blum, a permanent hire at an estimated salary of $240,000 per year—much higher than neighboring fire chiefs.
Attendance at that meeting was low, with about 15 people present, many of whom were firefighters.
This parcel tax would affect all residents, renters and businesses in Felton.
Thursday’s meeting—open to the public inside the Felton fire station at 131 Kirby St.—will give community members a chance to ask questions and share their opinions about the proposed measure.
