School is back in session, but if parents are looking for another fun and educational way for kids to connect with their hometown heroes, Felton Fire Protection District has just the (free) ticket.
On Sunday, Sept. 14, from 11am-4pm, Felton’s finest will be holding a Touch-a-Truck event at their fire station, located at 131 Kirby St.
This action-packed day will include a host of fun and activities for adults and children of all ages, along with a chance to learn more about local fire safety, the work of Felton’s firefighters and an opportunity to apply to support the district.
Tetherball, basketball, corn hole, pool and axe throwing is on the menu for the event, while warm weather may bring additional water play activities. Guests can also look forward to firefighter show-and-tell demonstrations, hands-on safety activities and a full open house of the fire station.
Firefighters will be on hand to demonstrate equipment dressed in full turnouts and SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) to help children feel more comfortable around first responders. Attendees will have a chance to blast down “flames” with a real fire hose, and CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) volunteers and local Firewise experts will also be present with information tables.
The event will feature a hearty barbecue with hot dogs, chips and drinks available for $7, and all proceeds will directly support department needs, such as new turnouts and gear for recruits.
A raffle will be held for a cord of split wood, cut and stacked by the firefighters themselves, and the silent auction will offer a wide range of items, including a Mt. Hermon Ropes Course tour, a Felton Family Wellness consultation, massage gift cards, LEGO sets, Crow’s Nest gift cards and more.
Members of the Felton squad of fire personnel shared their excitement in their own words, with one firefighter saying, “We are doing a fun event to bring the community together and show that we have a team who is ready to help.”
The FFPD Auxiliary has played a major role in organizing and supporting the event. All funds raised will be managed by the Auxiliary and dedicated to training, hiring and outfitting firefighters with the equipment they need.
The department will also be accepting applications for both firefighter volunteers and Auxiliary members during the event.
Ultimately, the day is about strengthening bonds by showing that FFPD members love what they do and are trained and eager to support their neighbors. Interim Fire Chief Isaac Blum emphasized that the heart of the day is about reconnecting: “More than anything, I think we’re just looking to get back in touch with the community.”
