It’s almost time for valley residents to fly American flags and don patriotic colors to march in the 21st annual Memorial Day weekend Felton Remembers Parade and visit the Covered Bridge Festival.
Longtime Felton locals Frank and Fran Adamson are leading the parade as grand marshals.
The couple said they are honored to lead the parade, though Fran is still figuring out what to wear as parade leader.
“I’ve been working on it from time to time,” she said. “I don’t want to be too serious. But we’ll see.”
Those in the parade gather in the parking lot of Pro-Build on Graham Hill Road before the procession makes its way through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park to Highway 9 and into downtown Felton.
Ralph Anybody from KPIG radio is the master of ceremonies and will announce the parade as it makes its way along Highway 9.
The usual host of Felton characters will be out in force on parade day, including the Ghost Mountain Riders, drivers displaying their classic cars, military veterans, bagpipers and children representing various groups.
Assemblyman Bill Monning, state Sen. Joe Simitian and Santa Cruz County Supervisor Mark Stone are all scheduled to participate, as well.
Parade organizer John Fasolas is still accepting applications to join the parade, particularly local military veterans.
The annual festival will follow from
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park with the historic covered bridge.
“It’s a family event for children and adults,” co-organizer Valeree Mills of Felton Feed said. “It’s about people getting together and enjoying good music.”
Felton Fire District volunteers will host a barbecue, and the Felton Fathers will cook their famous tri-tip sandwiches.
Live music from The Rayburn Brothers Band, Big Bambu and Cabin Fever will set the vibe for the beer and wine garden while local art is on display.
For the youngsters, there will be two bounce houses and a variety of games and activities.
