At graduation ceremony of the Baskin Engineering School, for the class of 2015 at UCSC, Stephen C. Petersen was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award.
The award is presented to faculty members who exemplify exceptional educational practice, and the graduating class selects the winner each year. This year, Petersen received his 16th consecutive Excellence of Teaching award for his lecturing in the Computer and Electrical Engineering Departments.
“Each award is unique because it was chosen by a different group of graduates,” said Petersen.
When asked about Petersen’s award, Tim Dodkin, Class of 2015, said “during my time at UCSC, Professor Petersen was always the one that was the most involved with students. He puts in the time and effort to teach students the basic foundation of engineering and problem solving skills.”
Dodkin said that Petersen treats students with respect and takes the time to get to know each one.
“When he gives you assignments, he never gives you the answers but he makes sure that you have all the tools needed to solve problems,” said Dodkin. “I think he puts as much time into teaching the students how to be engineers as the students do in learning.”
