Despite a loss, a day full of homecoming smiles, including a ceremony to honor Preston Boomer, the longtime science teacher who retired last spring after 56 years at his post, completed a spirit-filled homecoming for San Lorenzo Valley High School.
The Cougars fell to visiting Santa Cruz High School 31-6 on Saturday, Oct. 19.
The game was tight until the fourth quarter when Santa Cruz reeled off 18 unanswered points to hand the Cougars their sixth consecutive loss.
SLV dropped to 1-6 on the season, including 0-2 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play. Santa Cruz improved to 2-5 including 1-2 in league.
For the Cougars, Elliot Doran had a 2-yard scoring run in the second quarter. Kjell Johnson rushed for 76 yards on eight carries and Isaac Newbury was 8-for-18 for 72 yards and two interceptions.
During post-game festivities, Max La Capria and Adela Weigel were named homecoming King and Queen, while Sam Van Pykeren and Emily Holmes were runners-up.
