Fire didn’t halt annual 10K redwoods race

Dominic Grillo of Whitehouse Station, N.J., set the pace in the 41st running of the Race Thru the Redwoods on Sunday, Aug. 16, capturing the title of the annual 10-kilometer race in 39 minutes, 1 second. The 34-year-old averaged six minutes, 17 seconds per mile on the hilly course that hosted a total of 459 10K racers.
The run took place as scheduled, despite the Lockheed Fire burning to the northwest of Bonny Doon.
Brian Collett, 25, a runner from San Lorenzo, a town north of Hayward, finished second in 39:16.
Boulder Creek’s David Gonzales, 45, was the top valley finisher, winning the 45- through 50-year-old age group in 40:20 and placing fifth in the overall standings.
Greg Lendahl, a 40-year-old from Ben Lomond, was 12th in 42:35 and won the 40- through 44-year-old age bracket.
Jessica Jensen, 12, of Ben Lomond was the top local finisher in the kids division, completing the 1-mile run in third with a time of 6:32.
The top three 10K finishers in each age group, broken up in five-year increments, received awards. Here are the other locals who reached the top three in their age divisions:

• Vergere Street, 21, of Boulder Creek: first in the 20-24 women’s division, 50:38
• Steve Yatson, 43, of Felton: third in the 40-44 men’s division, 45:03
• Connie Sanchez, 44, of Felton: third in the 40-44 women’s division, 55:14
• Jennifer Stagnaro, 47, of Boulder Creek: first in the 45-49 women’s division, 51:28
• Lynn Walker, 52, of Ben Lomond: second in the 50-54 men’s division, 43:36
• Larry Bartholomew, 53, of Felton: third in the 50-54 men’s division, 45:06
• Terri Lafollette, 58, of Scotts Valley: first in the 55-59 women’s division, 1:04:53
• Pari Krilanovich, 55, of Felton: second in the 55-59 women’s division, 1:05:05
• Jule Rodgers, 57, of Scotts Valley: third in the 55-59 women’s division, 1:05:54
• Donna Florio, 60, of Scotts Valley: third in the 60-64 women’s division, 1:07:42
• Khartoon Brown, 72, of Mount Hermon: first in the 70-and-over women’s division, 1:14:59
