The City of Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley Fire Protection District, Central Fire District and the Santa Cruz Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to conduct a Regional Fire Service Consolidation Feasibility Study. This study aims to enhance fire service efficiency and improve emergency response capabilities.
The study will explore opportunities for increased coordination and potential shared services across the three jurisdictions to identify strategies that enhance public safety, maximize resources and ensure long-term sustainability of fire protection services.
“Residents rely on fire services during their most critical moments, and it is our responsibility to ensure they receive the highest standard of emergency care,” said City of Santa Cruz Fire Chief Rob Oatey. “As our communities continue to grow, fire protection services must evolve to meet their needs. This study is an important step in exploring how regional cooperation could strengthen fire response and enhance public safety.”
A consultant will be selected through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process to assess existing fire service models and analyze potential consolidation strategies. The study will include a review of current systems, evaluation of operational and jurisdictional consolidation opportunities and a feasibility analysis with recommendations.
City Manager Matt Huffaker stated this initiative aims to enhance fire protection across the region, improve response times and ensure the sustainability of fire departments.
The consultant selection process will begin soon, with the study expected to start later this year.
