The Forest Lakes Neighborhood Firewise and Safety Association presented a showing of “Elemental: Reimagine Wildfire” on June 26 at the Scotts Valley Community Theater.

More than 100 people attended the film and subsequent roundtable discussion with local fire experts, including CalFire and Scotts Valley Fire Department representatives and Christopher Bradford, a CZU Fire survivor who is running for the Fifth District supervisor seat that will become vacant upon Supervisor Bruce McPherson’s retirement.

In addition to the film and follow-up discussion, there were multiple vendors on site to assist residents with everything from installing fireproof decking to hardening one’s home with fire and drought-resistant plants.

Following the success of that initial event, the Forest Lakes group is presenting the first ever Firewise Festival at Roaring Camp in Felton on Sunday, July 21, from 11am-3pm.

Organizers are planning a day meant to connect residents with their wider community and recognize the importance of becoming a Firewise neighborhood by bringing together the best in fire safety and preparedness organizations, home hardening experts and defensible space services. While the event itself is free, attendees are encouraged to make a contribution in order to support the work of the group.

“Get ready for an unforgettable day of fun, education, and community spirit at the iconic Roaring Camp in Felton,” said organizers. “Our Wildfire Preparedness Event is designed to bring together the best in fire safety and preparedness organizations, home hardening experts, and defensible space services, all in one amazing location.”

Event highlights will include tables of fire safety and preparedness organizations, fire safety experts and CalFire representatives, along with home hardening and defensible space organizations, food trucks, raffle prizes and trivia contests.

The event was made possible thanks to a CalFire grant award that included funds to provide an educational opportunity.

Forest Lakes Neighborhood Firewise and Safety Association (FLFSA) hopes to inspire collaboration between all Santa Cruz Mountain communities to work toward meeting necessary fire safety standards to safely live in the WUI (Wildland Urban Interface), which is the area where human development and undeveloped wildland meet. It’s a common term in areas that experience wildfires, as brush, grass and forest fires can have a significant impact when they occur near homes and communities.

In addition to exploring the educational opportunities, attendees of this family-friendly event can purchase a parking pass for $5 (normally $10) online as well as discounted train tickets for either the Rainforest or Boardwalk Roaring Camp Train.

“Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to prepare for wildfire season while enjoying a day of fun and learning,” organizers said. “Secure your tickets now and be part of a safer, more resilient community!”
