Introducing small changes, like eating more fruit, can have a big impact on your overall health. (Contributed)

Does trying to be healthy feel so far out of reach? You are busy trying to balance work, family and other responsibilities. As a result, your health goals and good intentions are often put on hold. But, being healthy does not have to be a difficult road.

Many simple changes can go a long way toward improving your eating patterns and wellness. Healthy and strong bodies aren’t just built in a gym, and you don’t need to completely restrict your eating habits to boiled chicken and broccoli. Introducing small changes can have a big impact on your overall health.

Here are several things you can add in your daily routine that can lead to a healthier and happier lifestyle.

Feed your gut bacteria

A disruption in gut bacteria is linked to some chronic diseases, including obesity and a number of digestive problems. Good ways to improve gut health include eating fermented foods like yogurt and sauerkraut, taking probiotic supplements and eating plenty of fiber.

Consume an adequate amount of Vitamin D. The right amount of levels can help to optimize your health by improving bone strength, reducing symptoms of depression, strengthening your immune system, and lowering your risk for cancer.

Stay hydrated

Drink a glass of water with every meal. Drinking enough water can help maintain healthy brain function, concentration and a positive mood. Water tends to help kill cravings.

Consume the right amount of protein

High protein intake may boost your metabolic rate or calorie burn while making you feel full. It may also reduce cravings and your desire to snack late at night.

Avoid ‘fad’ diets

Diets are generally ineffective and rarely work well long term. Most of them only last temporarily. Overly restrictive diets actually lower your metabolic rate, making it more difficult to lose weight maintaining it long term. Fill your plate with non starchy veggies. Starchy vegetables generally have more carbs and calories than non starchy vegetables. Include more spinach and other dark green leafy vegetables, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower.

Drinking green tea is one of the healthiest beverages you can drink, decaffeinated is perfectly fine too. It is low in calories and packed with plenty of nutrients and antioxidants. This tea helps you burn fat by boosting your metabolism.

Move your body

And, of course, you need to move your body. Just 30 mins a day getting your heart rate up and weight bearing training will keep you strong and potentially live longer.

As you can see, your overall health has many factors tied to it. It’s not only about working out and eating such a strict diet. Just like most things in life, your health is about balance. If you begin to add in several or even all of the things that I listed, you will be in a better position to a road of being healthier.
