Though the San Lorenzo Valley girl’s water polo team has been a bright spot during the Cougars fall season, the lady Cougars fell in an upset to Santa Cruz High School 5-3 in the Tri County Valley Division tournaments on Nov. 1. The loss likely eliminates them from Central Coast Section playoff contention.
The Cougars finished the season 19-4 overall and 12-3 in league play. The team produced the two top scoring players in the area. Cameron Kellogg and Marissa Petras surged well ahead of the other top scorers in the Tri County League with 125 and 93 goals respectively. The next closest scorer, according to recorded statistics was Cailyn Costa of Monterey High who had 80 goals on the season.
The team played after press-time on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in what was likely their final game of the season.
Boys polo still in it
The San Lorenzo Valley boys, with an 11-7 overall record including 10-5 in the TCAL, took down Gilroy High School 9-5 in the first round of the TCAL Valley division tournament at the SLV pool on Nov. 1
Devon Northcutt led the Cougars scoring with four goals, Russell Hofvendahl added three and Elijah Schoepp and Sam Van Pykeren each scored once. The Cougars play next against Palma on Thursday, Nov. 3 after press time at a location to be announced.
Girls volleyball win in tournament
The Lady Cougars advanced to the second round of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League tournament after besting the visiting Saint Francis Central Coast Sharks 25-21, 16-25, 22-25, 25-11, 15-3.
The game was played in the SLV Middle School gym due to a light malfunction in the high school gym. Matty Prader led the Cougars in scoring with 10 kills and Kaitlyn Lotz pushed out 39 assists for the No. 6 seeded Cougars. The Cougars will play Harbor on Wednesday, Nov. 2 after press time in the second round of the tournament.
