A celebration of life will be Jan. 26 in Ben Lomond for Gloria Susan Barnes, who died Dec. 10 at home in Brookdale. She was 66.
Born in Flushing, N.Y., Mrs. Barnes graduated from Palisades High School in Palisades in 1964.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., in 1968. She also earned a paralegal degree and was a notary. She retired as the appeals clerk for the county of Santa Cruz.
Mrs. Barnes was an avid painter and photographer, and she loved to swim.
In her retirement, she began painting on silk scarves, which she gave to her many friends. Her main inspiration for painting scarves came from sailing, numerous times, on the ship Grace Bailey of Maine Windjammer Cruises, in Camden, Maine.
Mrs. Barnes also enjoyed singing in her church choir at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ben Lomond.
Mrs. Barnes raised two children as a single mother. Both children were born on the East Coast, and Mrs. Barnes moved to California to be near her parents, who had retired to Scotts Valley.
She is survived by her son, J.D. Sanderson of Brookdale; a brother, Bill Barnes, and his wife, Dena, of Arizona; a niece; and many close friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Annie Born; and her parents.
A celebration of life will take place at 1 p.m. Jan. 26, a Saturday, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 101 Riverside Ave., in Ben Lomond.
