Why do people choose organic? After speaking with many people, their answers to this question are simple: It tastes better. It’s more nutritious, and better for you. It doesn’t have all those nasty chemicals. It’s more sustainable for the planet. And those are just a few of the reasons.
Did you know that recent studies have linked pesticides to Parkinson’s disease and certain cancers? Commercial farming also depletes the soil of its nutrients and adds toxic chemicals to our food supply.
The great thing is that we all have a choice to buy organic food.
What is “organic”?
- Organic food is grown without the use of prohibited synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides or herbicides and processed without such procedures as irradiation.
- Organic foods are grown and processed using methods that do not deplete the earth of its natural resources.
- Organic farmers use earth-friendly methods of pest control and fertilization to build healthy soil and raise strong plants that are naturally resistant to pests and disease. These methods preserve resources for future generations and produce nutritious food.
- Organic growers and processors are dedicated to ensuring that their products are handled according to organic standards.
- Certified organic foods have been inspected by a third-party certifier, such as California Certified Organic Farmers, to ensure that the growing methods used are in accordance with organic standards.
- Organic is the highest standard we have for the production of food.
- Organic growers work with the seasons and cycles of nature, using agricultural methods that improve the fertility of our soil and conserve the purity of our water.
CCOF certification is your assurance that the products you buy meet and even surpass California standards for organic food. CCOF is a member of the Organic Trade Association and the International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements.
Under the organic rule, only certified products can be labeled “organic.” That is, only producers who have met national organic standards can use the term. When you buy organic products from a natural foods store, you are showing your commitment to a healthy community and a healthy planet.
Natural foods stores dedicated to selling only the highest quality products work hard to promote sustainable agriculture and maintain high standards in their stores every day. Why not help your community and local farmers while bettering your life and your health?
