A funeral was held this week for Harold F. “Hal” Wells, a retired golf pro, who died Feb. 22 in Santa Cruz following a lengthy illness. He was 76.
A native of Vallejo, Mr. Wells was a junior golf champion. After serving in the U.S. Air Force at March Air Force Base in Riverside, he returned to Vallejo and became the assistant golf pro at Blue Rock Springs.
He moved to Boulder Creek in 1967 and was the golf pro at Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club for a span of 40 years. He holds the course record of 23 at the nine-hole Valley Gardens Golf Course in Scotts Valley.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian Wells of Boulder Creek; a daughter, Marilyn Wells of Redmond, Wash.; a son, Tim Wells of Santa Cruz; a stepdaughter, Rita Lacey of Mokelumne; two sisters; three brothers; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jason Wells, and a stepson, Jimmy Walker.
Funeral services were held at Santa Cruz Memorial Mission Chapel at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, followed by a reception.
