A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, for longtime Boulder Creek resident Hazel Lorraine “Lorie” Black, who died at home in Boulder Creek on Sept. 22. She was 94.
Mrs. Black was born in Oakland to George and Hazel (Horstman) Lundgren. She attended Oakland public schools, and after graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1935, she attended University of California, Berkeley.
She obtained her Associate of Arts degree in 1937 and her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945.
Mrs. Black had a successful career as an executive secretary in the fields of law, insurance and manufacturing. She retired in 1982 to Boulder Creek, where she lived in the Horstman family home that was built in 1882.
Mrs. Black was a lifelong member of many organizations, including the Oakland-East Bay Chapter of Executive Women, the University of California Alumni Association and the American Association of University Women. She also enjoyed membership in the Boulder Creek Historical Society, Friends of the Library (Santa Cruz Public Libraries), and PEO Sisterhood (Chapter SP, Santa Cruz).
She was an active member in Boulder Creek United Methodist Church and the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
Mrs. Black is survived by her brother, Donald Lundgren, and his wife, Jean, of Pleasant Hill; a nephew, Steven Lundgren of Pleasant Hill; a niece, Karen Dobel of Sebastopol; a stepdaughter, Tisha Anne Ferguson, and her husband, Dale, of Mooresville, N.C.; and two stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Robert Elliott Black.
Mrs. Black was buried in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows cemetery in Boulder Creek with her pioneer great-grandparents Christian and Mary Horstman, her grandparents William and Elsie Horstman, her mother and her husband.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., in Santa Cruz. Condolences can be shared with the family at www.pacificgardenschapel.com.
