California State Parks has announced the delayed reopening of the seasonal campground at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, now scheduled for Aug. 1, instead of the previously set April 1 date. This delay, attributed to adverse weather and supply chain issues, affects crucial infrastructure upgrades, including accessibility improvements.

Santa Cruz District Superintendent Joe Walters expressed regret over the inconvenience, stating, “We appreciate the patience of our visitors as we enhance the park’s facilities.”

As a result of the delay, all camping reservations from April 1 to July 31 have been canceled, and affected guests will automatically receive full refunds. Notifications regarding cancellations have already been sent.

Visitors interested in camping are encouraged to check for updates on the park’s website, parks.ca.gov/HenryCowell. If the campground opens earlier, guests will be notified by email with booking opportunities.

The upgrades aim to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and improve accessibility and visitor safety. Enhancements include: ADA-compliant restroom and shower facilities with safety features; updated signage and non-glare lighting; and improved Campfire Center accessibility with enhanced seating and facilities.

California State Parks remains committed to providing a positive experience for all visitors once upgrades are completed. For assistance with cancellations, guests can contact the Reserve California Customer Contact Center at 1-800-444-7275.
