The San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley High School Boy’s Tennis Teams finished with identical 5-3 records in SCCAL play this season, earning them a second place tie behind Santa Cruz High.
During the regular season, both teams fell twice to Santa Cruz, and split the two matches between themselves. They were also able to post two wins each against Aptos and Harbor High Schools.
In the SCCAL Individual Singles and Doubles Tournament, San Lorenzo Valley Sophomore Brendan Dietrich, defeated Rowan Hunter of Santa Cruz 6-4, 6-0 in his first match, and then was defeated by No. 1 seed Volter Virtanen of Santa Cruz 6-4, 6-0.
“Brendan played his best tennis of the season in the tournament,” said SLVHS coach Wayne Sandles. “It should give him a confidence boost heading into next season.”
The Scotts Valley doubles team composed of Jack Beyke and Greg Beans, defeated the Aptos team of Jack Wood and Monte de Castagrene 6-0, 6-2 in their first round, and in the semi-final round bested Jesse D’Louhy and Collin Robins 6-1, 6-2.
In the doubles final, they met the No. 1 seeded Santa Cruz doubles team of Ryan Harlan and Will Tierney. The Santa Cruz duo defeated Beyke and Beans 6-2, 6-4.
Santa Cruz High will graduate seven of their 10 players, while San Lorenzo Valley will return four of their top five players next year. Coach Sandles expects SLVHS to contend for the league team crown, as well as the individual singles and doubles titles.
