Shopping tips:
1) Even when rushed, stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you.
2) Avoid shopping alone at night. Park your car in a well lighted area of the parking lot.
3) Avoid carrying a large amount of cash and be extra careful with purses and wallets. Do not leave purses, wallets, cell phones or tablets in shopping carts or unattended. It only takes a moment of distraction for someone to grab your possessions.
4) When paying with credit cards, watch your card during transactions. Make sure it is used for your purchase only. Keep your credit card number hidden.
5) Lock your car and close the windows even if you are gone only for a few minutes. Keep valuables out of sight. Lock your packages in the trunk.
6) Always have your car keys ready by the time you get to your car, especially if you have a lot of packages.
7) Be aware of scams that often take place in the shopping center parking lots. Never purchase anything from individuals who are selling goods from a vehicle or by other means.
8) Always report suspicious activity to the police department promptly.
Home security:
1) Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave your house. Do not put large displays of holiday gifts in view of windows.
2) Use automatic timers for your lights and have a neighbor watch your house and pick up newspapers and mail. Consider discontinuing service if you are away during the holidays.
3) Lock you car when parked at your house and avoid leaving valuables inside.
4) Be aware of door-to-door solicitors and other suspicious individuals in your neighborhood. All solicitors are required to have a license issued by the City with them at all times.
5) Remember, the Scotts Valley Police Department offers residents a residential ‘vacation check program’ for times when you are away. ContactScottsValley Police Dispatch for more information at 440-5670.
