Boulder Creek resident Ron Anderson displays a San Jose juniper, one of his bonsai trees. The one pictured at top is in a full cascade style, “kengai,” and is about 25 to 30 years old.
Below it, a fat, older oak tree has been shaped in the formal upright style, of “chokkan.” The oak is about 45 years old, but until six years ago, it lived on a local cow pasture, with cows nibbling on it and preventing it from reaching full growth.
Santa Cruz Bonsai Kai will host its annual show from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 20 and 21, at the Scotts Valley Community Center, 360 Kings Village Road.
