The General Election is November 8, but for the elected public officials in four districts, two water districts, one recreation district and two school districts, there will be no votes. All 22 candidates for offices in these districts in Boulder Creek, Scotts Valley, Felton and Ben Lomond were “appointed in lieu of election” this week, because there were no opponents.
The center of local election activity in Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley this fall will be in Scotts Valley, where there are 10 candidates for five Scotts Valley Unified School District trustee seats, five candidates for three City Council seats, and six candidates for three seats on the board of the Scotts Valley Fire Protection District. In no instances, did elected positions go unfilled for lack of a candidate.
Here is a summary of the candidates who will take office without an election, because of a lack of opposition.
Sandra Nichols retained her seat on the Santa Cruz County Board of Education, representing Felton.
Chris Perri and Danny Reber retained their Scotts Valley Water District posts for another four years. Ruth Styles retained the two-year seat on the water board.
In Boulder Creek, incumbents Tess Fitzgerald, Betsy Garties and Brian Valdivia will stay on the Boulder Creek Recreation and Park District board.
Also in Boulder Creek, Chris Currier, Robert Locatelli and Rick Rogers will stay on the Boulder Creek Fire Protection District board of directors.
There were no opposition candidates in other fire districts, resulting in the appointment of incumbents:
Ken Boynton, Lyle Fleming and Gary Herceg to full terms and Mary Clark to a two-year term in the Zayante Fire District; Michael Ayers, Sean Castange and Lisa Hill in the Ben Lomond Fire District; and David Ladd, Robert Gelini and Steve Richmond in the Felton Fire District.
In the San Lorenzo Valley School District, incumbents Laura Dolson and Jacqui Rice return to their seats with on opposition. Rice was just appointed to the post last month.
The six candidates for three spots on the Scotts Valley Fire Protection District are incumbents Alan Smith and Arthur Smith, and challengers Russ Paterson, Daron PIsciotta, Phillip Witt and Shawn Mosley. The filing period for this board was extended until Wednesday, Aug.17, because incumbent Jane Amstrsong did not file for reelection.
