The San Lorenzo Valley Cougars and Scotts Valley Falcons opened the high school football season over the weekend with a taste of live action. The scrimmage — meaningless in the standings — was a warm-up for the first game of the season.
It was a chance for teams in the local area to square off against one another, with Monte Vista Christian “winning” the contest and Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley finishing respectively in third and fourth places, separated by one point.
After the jamboree and several days of practice this week, the Falcons boarded a plane for Oregon on Wednesday, Sept. 1, to play Amity High School, Oregon’s Division III-A (small school) state champion in 2009. The Warriors went 14-0 to win the state title, but they’ve since graduated several of their star players.
Scotts Valley had traveled to Alice, Texas, in previous years, but this year, the team headed north. The game against the Warriors is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3.
San Lorenzo Valley, meanwhile, remains in California to host Sacred Heart Preparatory School of Atherton on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m. The contest pits the Cougars against the team that eliminated them from the playoffs in 2009, when Sacred Heart drubbed SLV, 45-14.
In week two, the Cougars travel to Piedmont High School at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 to play the Highlanders.
After returning from Oregon, the Falcons travel to Half Moon Bay High at 7 p.m. Sept. 10.
