A service will be this weekend for Boulder Creek resident Jane Madden, who died Dec. 10 in Santa Cruz. She was 84.
Mrs. Madden was born to Clara Esserman and John Clinton Griswold and raised in West Allis, Wisc. She was a student at Milwaukee Downer.
She lived in the towns of Los Gatos and Saratoga for many years while raising her children. Relatives said she loved the arts and was involved with the Montalvo Arts Center there. Later, she moved to Port Ludlow, Wash.
In her later years, she spent time with each of her children in North Carolina, Rhode Island and finally Boulder Creek, where she lived the past two years.
In her early years, she was a lifeguard and became a high school English teacher.
She married Walter J. Madden Jr., a naval officer and patent attorney for IBM, and shared 58 years with him. The couple had three children.
Mrs. Madden was a talented gardener and won many ribbons at the county fairs. She enjoyed gourmet cooking and entertaining her family and friends. She was a member of the Altar Guild at St. Andrews Church in Saratoga and a longtime member of the Great Books Club.
Mrs. Madden is survived by her children, Mary O’Leary of Wilmington, N.C., Carol Madden of Wyoming, R.I., and Anthony Madden of Boulder Creek; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; eight nieces; and four nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Madden Jr.; sister, Eileen Bonacina; and brothers, Russell and Clinton Griswold.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 101 Riverside Ave., in Ben Lomond. A celebration of life at the family’s home will follow the service. Condolences can be shared online at www.pacificgardenshapel.com.
