So much for Craigslist.
San Lorenzo Valley Chamber of Commerce director Beth Hollenbeck has organized the group’s first job fair, and it’s set for Oct. 29 in Felton.
“This is very much an experiment,” said Hollenbeck, a music teacher and activist.
“I just realized that there are so many small businesses, and it’s hard for them to get out that they are hiring,” she added.
Tables at the chamber’s first job fair are free. By contrast, a help-wanted listing on Craigslist.org, a popular way to advertise online, costs at least $75.
Hollenbeck, a lifelong valley resident, said she realizes there are few large companies or high-paying jobs in the San Lorenzo Valley, but she suggested there are many “nooks and crannies” where jobs can be found.
“There is so much talent out there,” Hollenbeck said. “We just want to help connect that local expertise to the dynamic businesses and organizations in our area.”
The fair will feature the Workforce Investment Board of Santa Cruz. Sean Castagna, the owner of the employment agency Santa Cruz Staffing, will also be among the businesses represented.
Hollenbeck continues to seek SLV employers who have job openings to set up a free table at the fair. The Saturday morning fair is free for both job seekers and employers. There will also be a job board where employers can list openings.
“Hopefully, we’ll do it again and this thing will grow,” Hollenbeck said.
