EDITOR,
On Feb. 29, at 3:15 a.m., my husband was up getting a glass of water and heard a several raccoons fighting outside our front door. He looked out the front window and to his amazement he saw a mountain lion lying down. He tapped on the window and the big cat looked back with one of the raccoons in its mouth. Just then it stood up (with the raccoon in its mouth) and walked away. We have lived here in Lompico for 11 years and have never seen one but know that they are here.
This is just a reminder to be aware of your surroundings (especially when it is dark outside). Secure all animals indoors and check on your children, even in daylight hours. Also keep food stored away, because anything that attracts other animals will also attract predators. Since we are encroaching into their domain, we need to be respectful and mindful.
