EDITOR,
I understand the denial of the La Bahia project by the Coastal Commission was because of the zoning variance. Webster’s definition of “variance”: “an official permit to do something normally forbidden by regulations, especially by building in a way or for a purpose normally forbidden by a zoning law or a building code.”
So, the Coastal Commission is upholding the law. Imagine that! Bravo to those strong enough to stand up to pressure and follow their convictions to do the right thing. I would think that those educated and well-paid architects and builders can come up with a design that stays within the law. Just like the rest of us have to do.

Editor’s note: The La Bahia project refers to the plan to tear down and rebuild a large hotel in front of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Fifth District Supervisor Mark Stone is the chairman of the Coastal Commission and received flak after his “no” vote on the project.
