EDITOR,
Thank you for Joe Shreve’s “Exterminating pests” (Page 12, March 16). After living in Ben Lomond and the hills behind Aptos, here are a couple techniques that have worked for me in controlling poison oak and yellow jackets.
Poison oak: I’m an organic gardener with one exception, poison oak. This situation is the only time I have used glyphosate. It usually takes two applications to kill off an established plant; new plants, only one. If you don’t want to spray, glyphosate can be applied with a wand applicator. You apply the material directly to the leaves.
Yellow jackets: Nothing has worked better for me than setting out a couple of the commercial traps around the yard on the first of May. The traps usually capture the queen early in the season and result in a yellow jacket-free summer.
