Letter: No More School Taxes

I have owned property in different areas of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties for 28 years. I currently own property in Scotts Valley. The school taxes are overwhelming. I currently pay over $1,000 year in property taxes just for schools, and now we are faced with yet another school tax (Measure A) that would cost me another $300/year or more in school taxes. To top it off, our kids are grown and gone. By the way, what happened to the California Lottery school funding?
According to Penny Weaver, superintendent of Scotts Valley Unified School District, “the actual tax rates and the years in which they will apply may vary from those presently estimated, due to variations from these estimates in the timing of bond sales, the amount of bonds sold and market interest rates at the time of each sale, and actual assessed valuations over the term of repayment of the bonds.”
So, in other words, the school district is not even sure of the actual amount of taxes we are voting on. It sounds to me like there are no limits to what this new property tax could end up being. That is like voting to give the school district a blank check that the property owners of Scotts Valley are going to have to cash. This is another school tax we can’t afford! All renters that think this is good thing, their kids get to go to top-notch schools and the cost will be shouldered by the property owners, think again. When property tax goes up, rents go up! I urge everyone to VOTE NO ON MEASURE A.
