EDITOR,
Mickey McGuire hit it on the head (“Assumptions obscure poor economy’s roots,” Commentary, Aug. 12). Bravo, sir! I couldn’t have said it better, though I think your readers need to do more research on the political game-playing going on in this country today. Those in Congress are protecting the extreme wealthy, forgetting trickle-up economics. Give the poor a break and the money will end up back in the Fat Cat’s pocket. Diminishing the middle class and increasing the lower class does nothing but create exactly what we tried to avoid in Europe a few hundred years ago. History has shown that fact over and over again.
“Why would anyone want to be President after the eight years of Bush?” I repeated that to several friends at the start of the elections. One president puts us into a war, recession and with a huge deficit, while President Obama gets the blame. Does the public have that short a memory? Are we that easily manipulated by the lies, assumptions and accusations of special-interest groups? I fear so. This is partisan politics at its worst.
So, I ask, will anything change for the better if we seat a Republican in the presidency? Will our economy suddenly re-emerge like a latent flower of the desert? Where is the indignation that removed so many Republicans during the Bush era? Remember who put us here.
Health care, Social Security, the American dream — I really don’t care which party works for our country as long as they work for everyone. Monarchies rule from power and wealth. Democracy is supposed to be a government for the people and by the people.
