EDITOR,
In response to Ruth Caudell’s letter (“Emergency contraception a responsible choice,” Letters, March 2), what is most apparent is that she, as did Julie Hendrik, throws in our path as many “red herrings” as she can to divert us from the real issue in the abortion debate. That issue is: Is the preborn child a member of the human family or not? The writer says, “A group of cells does not constitute a complete being.” But scientifically, we know that from the earliest stages of development, the preborn are distinct, living and whole human beings. True, they must grow, develop and mature, as we all must do through all stages of life.
But what most prompted this response was Ruth’s contention that “ending any unwanted possible pregnancy is an act of selflessness and moral courage.” Believe me, I have talked with many women struggling over the decision whether to abort or keep their child, and I have never heard that reason given. But, I suppose “going green” and “offering one up for the planet” is about a good excuse as any other. That is, if the unborn is not a member of the human family.
