EDITOR,
I’ve often thought that any discussion about Target at Gateway South should start with two volunteered pieces of information: first, how far from ground zero the speaker lives; and second, how long it takes them to get to a Target. (In my case, the answers are “one half mile” and “20 minutes.”)
Of course, if you don’t live in this area, naturally your shopping convenience and the possibility of tax revenue might seem alluring. See? I understand your position, even if you don’t — or won’t — understand mine. But certain facts are being recently and consistently ignored by the “We loved Target, darn you!” camp that should be pointed out now.
Target gave two specific reasons for not coming to Gateway South: one, the current state of the economy; and two, a required $10 million land-development cost. They never so much as hinted for a millisecond that neighborhood opposition had any influence on their decision. In fact, they are on public record saying the exact opposite, that there was more than enough community support for them to come to La Madrona.
If — all the same — you’re now frustrated with your neighbors who were hoping for better, stronger solutions to the city’s revenue needs, then unless you actually work for Target or Title II, maybe you really ought to reconsider your motivations on that point. Perhaps the next time you look in the mirror?
