EDITOR,
After reading a letter to the editor this past issue (“Debris a danger to cyclists,” Sept. 30) I felt compelled to write. The writer was concerned about debris in the roadway “in the bike lane” along Highway 9 and the danger it imposed upon bicyclists. The writer went on to say that Caltrans signs that fill the entire bike lane are also dangerous. Just for the record, there are no bona fide “bike lanes” along any of Highway 9 or Big Basin Highway. That white line you see is a fog line, and very frequently there are mere inches to the right of that line. I know we are supposed to share the road, but honestly, there are too many places on both Highway 9 and Big Basin Highway where there is simply not enough room. Add a blind driveway to the mix and it is a recipe for disaster. If bikes had operating lights both front and rear, it would make them so much more visible to motorists. Just a thought.
