Letters: Campaign smells off

Aside from making my choices for federal and state offices, I have not given much consideration to “down ballot” candidates, such as county supervisor. I am aware that there are at least two candidates for this nonpartisan office — Mr. Bruce McPherson and Mr. Eric Hammer. Judging from the ratio of McPherson to Hammer lawn signs, the weekly “Democrats for McPherson” mailers in my mailbox and the abundance of letters in this section of the paper defending him and trashing the opposition in his name, it appears that Mr. McPherson has boatloads of money and a well-organized campaign that is positioned to buy this office for him. Am I the only one who tends to be suspicious of candidates or causes with so much cash behind them that they are able to literally drown out the voices of the opposition? What I find curious is why a prominent Republican state senator who reportedly so distinguished himself in this office has chosen to step down a few rungs on the political ladder to be elected to a county office. Mr. McPherson’s candidacy does not pass the smell test for me.
